October 15 > Maiden flight of the BO108, forerunner of the EC135, featuring a Bearingless Main Rotor (BMR).

December >
French and German governments sign a general MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) and a second MOU for development of the NH90. MBB, Gruppo Agusta, Fokker, Westland Helicopters, and Aerospatiale Helicopters Division (overall project coordinator) cooperate on the feasibility and predefinition study for the project.

1989

November 30> > Contract signed for development of the Tiger, first helicopter produced through Franco-German cooperation.

Spheriflex™ rotor created, a technical innovation intended to significantly improve Super Puma cost-effectiveness.

Maiden flight of the Tiger, designed entirely in composite materials and featuring a Fiber Elastomeric Bearingrotor (FEL).

November 19 > The AS365 X Dauphin beats the world record for speed (all categories) flying at 320 km/h over a 3 km course, a record which still stands today.
