Texas DPS - On 8 February 2006, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) accepted the first AS350 B2 AStar produced at the American Eurocopter site in Columbus, Mississippi.

In September 2005, American Eurocopter received the certification from the FAA to manufacture AS350 B2 and B3 AStars in the United States. A few months later, Eurocopter’s US subsidiary delivered the first of these aircraft, produced in Columbus, to the DPS base in Austin, Texas. The DPS works in the law enforcement sector, and now has a fleet of nine AStars. For this type of mission, the helicopter is an effective work tool: it allows police officers to get to the scene quickly, and gives them a perfect view of what is happening on the ground. But the Texas DPS also uses its AStars for SAR and EMS missions, to assist officers working on the ground, and to track down dangerous criminals or fugitives.

The DPS has nine bases in Texas, including sites in Austin, Dallas, and Houston. The latest AStar will be stationed in San Antonio, where a base has been set up to meet the calls from local inhabitants and politicians for effective police support from the air. With this in mind, the aircraft has been equipped with searchlights, a Wescam camera, a FLIR, and thermal equipment for tracking people day and night.

Tailor-Made for the Missions of the DPS
“The AS350 B2 is the perfect helicopter for our missions,” explains Captain Steve Powell, the Head of the Texas DPS air unit. “This aircraft has excellent performances, at 140 miles/hour it is really fast, and it has a very spacious cabin. The B2 can also carry special equipment or firearms. Ever since we have been flying Eurocopter helicopters, we also really appreciate the first-class support provided by American Eurocopter.” The AS350 B2 can transport five people and a pilot, and has undeniable advantages such as excellent maneuverability and visibility, and a powerful engine: this aircraft is a genuine thoroughbred.

“We are delighted to accept this first AStar produced here in the United States,” continues Captain Powell. “We chose this helicopter because of its qualities. It is quite simply the best, the most suited to our requirements, and the safest aircraft for effectively performing our missions!”
